Graphic and Web Designer

A young graphic and web designer's short story

Hi! As you have already figured out my name is Megan Bouwkamp. It's pronounced Bo-camp in case you were curious. I am a graphic and web designer based in the beautiful upstate of South Carolina. I have a degree in graphic and web design from Greenville Technical College.

My journey to the graphics world really started when Myspace was very popular. I was so intrigued with designing my own theme that I taught myself some very basic html code. From there I found I loved more of the graphic design side when I took three years of a graphic communications class at my high school. That was when I decided to go to Greenville Technical College and have their amazing staff teach me.

I really enjoy a very clean, minimalistic style. I also love a combination of organic and geometric style. I try to grow my skill everyday and enjoy learning new things as much as I can. With the constant creations of new programs and trends changing, goodness knows there is always more to learn.

The Departed Movie Poster

I designed this poster in Adobe Photoshop. I added a soft outter glow to the title so it wouldn’t seem so harsh on the grunge background. I pulled the yellow from the background of the image so it would unify the title and image. I chose GillSansMT for the quote font because I felt it complimented Impact Regular, which was used for the title.

Photo Restoration

I did a few photos for this family. The mother came to me wanting to know if I could remove this yellow tint a student photographer put on her images. She loved everything but the tint. I went into Adobe Photoshop to use the color balance in image adjustments.

Photo Restoration

I was challenged by a teacher to find a very damaged photo, repair and colorize it. So I tore one of my photos of my grandmother, taped it back together and scanned it in at 600 ppi. I used a combination of layers, layer masks, clone stamp, and spot healing tool to repair it. I then used multiple layers to colorize the photo.

Hand Drawn Types

We were given the task to choose four expression from a long list. Then we needed to create fonts that reflected the expression. I used a combination of a black pen, markers and colored pencils.

So Fine White Wine

I was told to try to imagine my type deigns on a package and what would they be for. I looked at the words “So Fine” and thought, “that would make for a great wine name”. I created this using Illustrator and Photoshop. I scanned the type design in at 600 ppi and then traced it in Iullustrator. I brought the traced font into Photoshop and used the transform tool to make it fit the bottle. I used the transform tool on all of the text images as well. I kept the design clean and simple to have a modern look.

Double Trouble

I was told to try to imagine my type deigns on a package and what would they be for. I always thought of the daring games me and my brother would play with our friends when I read the words “Double Trouble”. So I figured what a fun sounding game this could be. I created it using Illustrator and Photoshop. After scanning in the type design image at 600 ppi, I traced it in Illustrator and brought it over into Photoshop. I chose to use pink and blue to show that boys and girls can face off as teams. I wanted to have two martini glasses on there to reiterate the double trouble aspect of the game. It also shows that it is meant for 21 and over. Like most games, I also added how many players can play, about how long it will take, and what age range can play.

Shock Pop Mock Billboard

I was given the task of inventing a new ice cream and drawing up a billboard for it. I invented Shock Pop as Pet’s new flavor. It is a cola flavored ice cream with pop rocks in it. My brother, our friends, and I would always do this as kids. So I figured kids haven’t changed that much and would still love it but now in ice cream. The colored rocks flying off the icecream help show that it is the same as when you drink cola and eat pop rocks. Since most drivers only have 6 seconds to look at a billboard I wanted to keep the word count under 6 and keep them large. The bright colors will attract attention of both parents and children while the warm background will make them think of summer days.

Camper Soap Box Desgin

We were tasked with inventing a new soap and how the package would appear. I was inspired by my brother and his friends to create Camper. The soap that repels bugs while keeping you clean without smelling like bug spray. I created this using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator. I layed out the die cut in Illustrator. I then cut each piece and placed it into Photoshop to make the images conform to a box shape. I also added the word camper to the bar of soap and made sure the reflections were the same as what was on the box. I chose green as the box color since most people relate a deep green to woods and outdoor activities. I pulled an orange from a fire picture to use on the words. The font I chose reminded me of something you would see on a campgrounds sign so I felt it was fitting.

One Page Bank Ad

The idea behind this one page ad was to get people to come into the bank. Most people switch banks, credit cards, etc for the fact of either a higher interest rate for return or a lower interest rate for paying. This bank was offering a deal of double the interest rate on returns. The two glasses play on the old adage is the glass half empty or half full. Well this bank offers you a full glass so you don’t have to see it in any other way. The headline plays on that as well saying to Fill the Need for Greed. Come fill up your half full glass, the glass being the greed that every person is prone to feeling. I kept the font very serious and clean along with black and white theme because banks are a very serious place of business.

Two Paged iPhone 6 Ad

The objective was to make a two page magazine spread for an iPhone ad. At the time of this project the iPhone 6 had just been released. I know Apple usually likes to use a clean, minimalist style. I wanted to keep true to that on the right side of the ad. On the left side I wanted it to feel jumbled and clumsy like thoughts rushing through our heads. We all have busy days jammed packed with thoughts, questions and concerns. I wanted to express that by not just the copy but by making the copy all different sizes and angles. I created this using Photoshop.

My classmate from high school contacted me asking for me to create them a logo for their massage therapy business. She had already had the name chosen and wanted a dark color purple to be involved. I choose to start the dark purple in the middle of the flower and it get lighter on the outside to show relaxing coming out with work.

A skin care company called Orange Daily wanted a pop up window for people to sign up for their newsletter. I wanted to keep it clean and fresh like their product! You’ll also see on the site that the header images, the sidebar newsletter offer, and the stylized buttons I also designed clean to keep with the same design concept.

Dozo Sushi Hibachi

Dozo is locally owned by two brothers. They set out to open a restaurant in a small town that offered great sushi and hibachi. I had been eating there for years when they came to me about setting up a website for them so their customers can know where their new location was. They also liked the idea of new people being able to see what is on the menu before coming to the restaurant.
